Brand positioning is the specific, ownable place a business occupies in a customer's mind relative to competitors: what category you compete in, and what you claim inside that category that a competitor can't credibly claim too. It's the first of the five brand strategy drivers, and every other driver is built on top of it.

## Why Positioning Comes First

Identity without positioning is just style. Communication without positioning has nothing consistent to repeat. Perception without positioning has no intended target to measure against. Businesses with clear category ownership see 20–30% higher long-term ROI.

## The Most Common Positioning Mistake

Most weak positioning isn't wrong, it's generic. "High quality," "great service," and "customer-first" are true of nearly every competitor, which means they position nothing.

## How to Build a Positioning Statement

Answer four things: who is this for, what category are we in, what do we deliver that's different, and why should someone believe that claim. A fast test: read the statement without the company name attached. If it could describe three competitors equally well, it isn't positioning yet.

## Signs Your Positioning Is Weak

- You compete on price more often than you'd like
- Your sales cycle is long because prospects "need to think about it"
- Every new campaign feels like it's introducing the business from scratch
- You struggle to finish "we're the only ones who ___"

## Positioning vs. the Other Four Drivers

Positioning is not your logo (identity), not your messaging (communication strategy), and not what customers currently believe (perception, the measurement of whether positioning landed). ## FAQ

**How is positioning different from a tagline?**
A tagline is a compressed expression of positioning, not the strategy itself.

**Can positioning change over time?**
It should be stable for years, not quarters.

**Does positioning matter for small, local businesses too?**
Yes, arguably more, since they often compete directly on price and convenience by default.
